Frequently Asked Questions about Skype for Business

Is Blackboard IM going away?

Yes.  Starting July 28, 2014, GTCC will officially use Microsoft Skype Business instead of Blackboard IM.  ITS will remove Blackboard IM software from staff and faculty computers by this date.

Why are we moving to Skype for Business?

We need a system that gives us more flexibility including use on mobile devices, with additional features and integration not previously available.

When is GTCC officially starting with Skype for Business for all users?

GTCC faculty and staff members will use Microsoft Skype for Business officially starting on July 28, 2014.  Students will begin using Skype Business starting August 2014.

Installation directions and training mentions several versions of Skype for Business. How do I know which version I will install?

Your version of link depends on your computer (PC, MAC) and your operating system.  If you are using your GTCC PC computer, most likely you will install Skype for Business.  MAC users install Lync 2011.  Computers located off-campus and student users may vary.  For example, if a student is using a PC with an operating system of Microsoft XP or earlier, that student will install Lync 2010. Windows 7 and higher will install Skype for Business.

When will students have access to Skype for Business?

Students will have access to Skype for Business for download starting in August 2014.  They will receive installation directions and training for Skype for Business via the Moodle site, “eLearning Information for Students”.  Faculty and staff members should direct students to this Moodle site for Skype for Business assistance.

How will students receive training on Skype for Business?

Students will learn how to use Microsoft Skype for Business via the Moodle site, “eLearning Information for Students.” This site is maintained by the eLearning department.

Blackboard IM automatically creates groupings under the Classmates tab of my students starting on the first day of class. Will Skype for Business do this?

At this time, no, but we hope to make this available in the future.  Your students will be able to find you by typing your name into Skype for Business, and you’ll do the same.
